West Ham hopeful of Tomkins comeback before season's end

West Ham United are hopeful that defender James Tomkins will make a full recovery before the end of the season after going through surgery on his dislocated shoulder.

The 25-year old defender, who progressed through the Hammers' youth ranks and recently signed a long-term contract with the club, sustained the injury during a training session last week.

Stijn Vandenbroucke, West Ham's head of medical and sports science, confirmed that Tomkins had gone under the knife but was backing him to return this campaign.

"James Tomkins underwent successful surgery on his dislocated shoulder on Wednesday and will now commence his rehabilitation, with a view to him returning to fitness before the end of the season," Vandenbroucke told the club's official website.
