West Ham United want to bring Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole back to Upton Park.

The Sunday Mirror says the England midfielder can walk out on Chelsea after protracted talks over a new contract to stay at Stamford Bridge broke down over his pay demands.

The former Upton Park trainee left the Hammers in the summer of 2003 and kept the door open for a return to the club one day

After signing for Chelsea he said: "I still have great affection for West Ham and I would like to think that I could return there some time in the future."

Co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold believe Cole's capture would send out a serious message of intent to supporters.
