West Ham United defender Winston Reid is enjoying his first season in England.
The New Zealand star gave his best performance for West Ham since joining this summer in Monday’s 5-1 FA Cup victory over Burnley.
However, within hours of the final whistle, news about Tuesday’s devastating earthquake in Christchurch began to filter through.
Reid, 22, said: “The game is put into perspective. Most of my family still live there so it was very unsettling. It was good my family are OK, but there are lots of people who have died.”
As for life at West Ham, he added: “After a tough start to the season with being injured, the League is everything I thought it would be.”
