West Ham chief backs Carroll for Euro2016 spot in England squad

Andy Carroll should be in England's squad for this summer's European Championships according to West Ham United co-chairman David Gold.

The injury to Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck has opened up a spot in Roy Hodgson's Three Lions roster for the UEFA tournament in France and Gold feels Carroll would be a perfect addition as he provides a point of difference.

"They don't have an alternative," Gold said of the towering 27-year-old who has scored five goal in his past eight outings.

"The centre forwards they've got are all very similar. All good players, don't misunderstand me, but if suddenly you think, do you know, I'm a manager, this isn't going right, I'd like to change this, I'd like to change tactics because maybe we need an aerial threat, who do you bring on?

"Another guy, 5ft 2ins?

"I don't think so. He's fit, strong and playing well."

Hodgson is due to name his final 23-man squad for Euro2016 on Thursday.
