His latest goal was an acrobatic hook from close range which sealed Saturday’s victory.

And the 31-year-old said: "When I spoke to Sam (Allardyce) after the New Year’s Day incident, the second red card, it was really cards-on-the-table stuff. Everything got said there and then and it was put to bed quite quickly.

"He got a lot of stick because of it for sticking with me, there was a lot of criticism.

"I knew what I had to do, which was work hard and knuckle down and when I got my chance I had to repay the boys and the people who stuck by me.

"I had all my family who were absolutely terrific and I worked really hard with Lee Richardson, the psychologist here.

"Everyone knows Sam builds a great backroom staff here and they have been great with me."
