West Ham United boss Gianfranco Zola will not fret about his job until they're mathematically safe.

The Italian has often said he has gained five years' worth of experience in one season - and he would relish the chance to build on that next term.

But Zola conceded: "The future depends on what happens right now, so my mind is totally on that.

"We're going to talk (with the owners) about it at the end of the season. The important thing is to get the situation sorted, then we're going to talk about it."

When new owners David Gold and David Sullivan took over they discovered debts of £105million - the same level of liabilities that sent Portsmouth into administration.

West Ham's financial situation forced them to cash in on key players like Collins last September. Had Gold and Sullivan not taken over in January then England trio Robert Green, Carlton Cole and Matthew Upson may also have been sold.

"Considering the problems we had since I came over everybody has dealt with the situation well," said Zola. "If you think about it, we were one of the richest teams and became one of the poorest. We had to go through a lot of problems. We had to sell a lot of players and they were important ones for the team.

"We have managed the situation very well and I'm sorry Portsmouth couldn't do the same.

"Considering the circumstances last year we have done a good job. I don't want to say it was me because the job has been done by a group of people and I shared the good things that we did last year with all of my staff.

"This year we haven't been able to do the same but, if we do well in the last three games, considering everything we have been through it is a decent job."
