West Ham boss Allardyce: Old transfer system was better

West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce says the current transfer windows system isn't a patch on what English football used to rely on.

Allardyce wrote in the London Evening Standard: "I do not like the system of transfer windows but it is not going to change soon.

"Anyway, back then you could do business right up until the end of March and that was important to clubs who suffered horrendous injuries and those who needed to sell because of cash-flow problems.

"I would debate with anyone that the old system was much, much better than the current one.

"It would be better now perhaps if the window closed before the start of the season but one thing which could never happen is the abolition of the January transfer window.

"Football clubs are business organisations these days and need to trade, even if it is during those two windows during the year."
