West Ham boss Allardyce confident of big things from Downing

West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce is delighted with their deal for Liverpool winger Stewart Downing.

Allardyce wrote in the London Evening Standard: "Signing Stewart, a real top-end Premier League and international player, is a coup for the club but it means we've reached our salary cap and we can't do any more business unless the wage bill is reduced by players leaving.

"We're a bit concerned that we only have Modibo Maiga, who has had a good pre-season and scored a few goals, and Andy as central strikers although I'm looking for our wide players to come in and provide their quota of goals.

"Stewart is an invaluable acquisition in that respect and I must say I always have been a 'crossing' manager."
