West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce knows Joe Cole was upset being hooked during defeat to Chelsea last week.
Allardyce wrote in the London Evening Standard: "I understood Joe Cole's frustration when he was taken off before half-time against Chelsea but I had to do something. In fact, I had made the decision to change things after the first goal [after 21 minutes] but just as we were about to make the substitutions, Chelsea scored a second. I was gutted.
"In that position you have to accept you are going to be criticised whatever you do but the reality now is we have to win a game of football and it is my job to show the players, confidently and quietly, the way to do it. They've done it before and can do it again."
