West Ham United are sweating on an answer from Eidur Gudjohnsen.
The London Evening Standard says the Hammers stepped up their bid to sign Gudjohnsen despite interest in the former Chelsea striker from newly-promoted Premier League club Swansea City.
West Ham manager Sam Allardyce, who saw a youthful Hammers' team lose 2-1 to Swiss League champions BSC Young Boys in Grenchen on Monday night, is keen to add the 32-year-old to his depleted squad before the start of the new season.
Swansea, who are managed by former Watford boss Brendan Rodgers, also want to sign the ex-Bolton, Chelsea, Barcelona and Monaco striker, who is now a free agent.
Gudjohnsen almost signed for West Ham on loan from Monaco in January 2010 but changed his mind on transfer deadline day and instead moved to Tottenham.
