West Bromwich Albion prospect Sam Mantom admits he could've been lost to the sport.
Mantom reveals he also was a talented cricketer growing up.
He told the Sunday Mercury: "When I was younger I had a choice between cricket and football, but I chose football.
"I played every sport at school apart from rugby. I didn't really like it. It just wasn't for me. I was always worried about getting injured.
"A few people dislike me because I could beat them at every sport.
"I've had it in the ear from some of my mates about it, but it's just the way I am. I can't help it!
"I suppose I'm used to it now, but my focus is just on succeeding at West Brom now.""I can play cricket to a good level. I used to play for Stourbridge and the district, but I thought that football was the better way to go.
