Steven Reid was impressed by West Bromwich Albion rookie James Hurst in their Carling Cup defeat to Ipswich Town.

Skipper-on-the-night, Reid, is confident Hurst will build on his impressive Portman Road display.

"None of the lads really performed to the levels expected, but he had a great debut and hopefully he can go on to great things," he told the WBA website.

"Hursty is a decent player and he was probably the pick of the lads last night.

"I thought he had a great debut.

"He has got good energy and gets up and down the line and there is no reason why he can't crack on now and be a part of the squad and go on to good things for the club.

"There were a couple of injuries. Nicky Shorey and Joe Mattock weren't available.

"But Hursty has done well in the reserves games he's played and he showed last night that the head coach and staff, along with Keith Downing in the reserves, have brought him on well.

"There's no reason he can't kick on after the confidence-booster last night."
