West Brom star reveals reasons he cannot wear Remembrance Day poppy

West Bromwich Albion midfielder James McClean will refuse to wear a Remembrance Day poppy next month.

McClean, who is from Derry in Northern Ireland, sparked controversy when he refused to wear a poppy while playing for Sunderland on Remembrance Day three years ago.

However, the 26-year-old has defended his stance, saying wearing a poppy would conflict with his personal beliefs.

"People say that by not wearing a poppy, I'm being disrespectful, but they don't ask me why it is that I choose not to wear it," McClean said.

"If the poppy was simply about World War One and Two victims alone, I would wear it without a problem. I would wear it every day of the year if that was the thing.

"But it stands for all the conflicts that Britain has been involved in. Because of the history where I come from in Derry, I cannot wear something that represents that."
