Gordon Strachan has named James Morrison as Scotland skipper for Friday's World Cup qualifier with Croatia.

The 27-year old West Bromwich Albion midfielder becomes the first English-born player to captain the Scots since Bruce Rioch did 35 years ago and Strachan had delight in appointing him for at least the Group A fixture in Zagreb.

"James has been an excellent Scotland player over a number of years now," he said.

"He thoroughly deserves this recognition and honour after a terrific season."
