West Brom’s Hodgson not about to recall NZ ace Wood from Birmingham

West Bromwich Albion manager Roy Hodgson will resist the temptation to recall young striker Chris Wood from Birmingham City despite the injury to Shane Long.

West Bromwich Albion manager Roy Hodgson will resist the temptation to recall young striker Chris Wood from Birmingham City despite the injury to Shane Long.

The Baggies’ Republic of Ireland international is set to be sidelined for up to six weeks after sustaining a knee injury in a poor challenge from Aston Villa’s Alan Hutton on Saturday but Hodgson says that New Zealand teenager Wood, who has scored 11 goals since arriving at St Andrew’s in August, will remain with his current club.

“We have no plans to bring him back at the moment," Hodgson told Express & Star.

"We seem to be doing OK without him and I wouldn't want to bring him back just to bolster our squad or make our reserves stronger.

"To bring Chris back now would be the wrong thing to do, because he's getting so much playing time at Birmingham and using it very wisely."
