West Bromwich Albion No2 Keith Downing says new England coach Roy Hodgson will select his teams on merit.
Downing revealed that while new England manager Hodgson may appear to be mild-mannered - he is a hard taskmaster behind the scenes.
He insists: "There will be no grey areas. People will know the role they're expected to do. They'll be told in no uncertain terms and if you don't do it you won't play.
"Because of his soft approach people might misinterpret how he is and whether he can handle senior players.
"But he'll tell people exactly what he wants and will get angry if he has to. He has integrity and nothing is ever personal.
"There is a diligence about him and enthusiasm to get players to be better. I think the England players will embrace that."
