West Bromwich Albion legend Cyrille Regis says appointing Alan Irvine as new manager is a massive gamble by chairman Jeremy Peace.

Supporters flooded social media with fury and threatened to demand refunds on season tickets while others tied banners to gates at The Hawthorns demanding the exit of Peace.

Regis told the Express & Star: “I don’t think you can see it any other way than it being Jeremy Peace’s biggest gamble yet.

“I know Alan Irvine and I like him; I know that he is a very well thought of coach.

“But the fact is that he has had a couple of ‘pops’ at management and it hasn’t gone well for him and now he has been put in charge of the team on the back of a very turbulent year.

“Jeremy has made some great decisions down the years.

“But this is another which will leave the fans desperately hoping he has got it right after a couple of moves he would admit himself didn’t work out.”
