West Bromwich Albion are chasing Sunderland attacker Stephane Sessegnon.
The People says Clarke hopes to do a deal with Paolo Di Canio for £6m-rated Sessegnon, who can leave the Stadium of Light.
Albion need to agree a fee or pay a large sum for a season-long loan.
Sessegnon scored a wondergoal in the derby win at Newcastle last season but does not fit into Di Canio's side of new arrivals.
