West Bromwich Albion defender Jonas Olsson is determined to keep hold of his place this season.
Olsson is under fresh threat from new summer arrival Diego Lugano.
He told the Birmingham Mail: "Diego is an experienced defender so he will challenge.
"You need challenges in every aspect of life.
"Healthy competition makes you perform better. It's vital in football. It makes you raise your game.
"It's important in the dressing room, but also important in that you need a wide squad to cope as best as possible."
