West Brom captain Jonny Evans was left frustrated after their 1-0 defeat to Watford.

The Baggies - backed by a bumper following of 2,200 - were on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline after Troy Deeney's 77th minute strike at Vicarage Road.

The result leaves Alan Pardew's men eight points adrift of Premier League safety.

"It's difficult to take," said Evans. "At half time we were pretty pleased with certain aspects of our performance. I really felt like we could go out and win the game in the second half. But once they got the goal we found it difficult. They defended well to keep the clean sheet."

Indeed, Albion looked much more compact than in last weekend's defeat to Huddersfield Town. But their resistance was breached with less than 15 minutes remaining; a consequence of trying to win the game according to Evans.

"We had a lot of meetings in the week about how to be more secure behind the ball, stop teams breaking on us as much. But when you're pushing to win the game, things become a bit more stretched. Gaps start to appear and they got the goal.

"The most important thing for us is that we still believe. We're working hard. You could see that today. The fans were receptive to that and it gave us a lift. They appreciated the work rate we put in today. We thank them for travelling."
