West Brom boss Hodgson: Di Matteo should share in survival success

West Bromwich Albion boss Roy Hodgson insists predecessor Roberto di Matteo deserves credit for their successful Premier League return.

Hodgson stressed that, with Di Matteo having amassed 26 points at the end of his reign, his predecessor deserves a huge share of the credit for Albion's fine season.

He told the WBA website: "I don't care whether you're at Manchester United or West Bromwich Albion, you have to make sure your set-plays are organised, that you get things sorted out etc.

"So I suppose when I came here, I didn't have any further thoughts to those.

"It was a case of 'let's get down to work' and 'let's make sure that we start to make it clear to the players what we as a coaching staff expect from them'.

"I wanted to make certain that during the training sessions, we gave them a chance to rehearse and practice and give them some sort of guidance.

"I don't think I came in with any other sorts of ideas of 'if I do this and change this things will turn around'.

"My thoughts were that we had to become a better team unit, defend better and attack better and just do better together which, to be fair, had also shown in earlier parts of the season with Roberto.

"Let's be fair, we've stayed up and I'm delighted and glad that I have played a part.

"But Roberto has also played a part because I have had nine games and he had 25.

"So any success of the team staying up should be shared between us."
