West Brom boss Hodgson admits having to dump fringe players to help kids progress

West Bromwich Albion boss Roy Hodgson was pleased to clearout his squad this summer.

Hodgson was eager to make room for some of the club's talented youngsters.

He told the Birmingham Mail: "In every transfer window you look and think 'it would have been nice of this or that had been done' but in general we've got to be very pleased with the transfer window, not least in the sense that some of the players that weren't getting a game here or featuring have moved on.

"That has cleared the way now for the George Thornes, the Billy Joneses and Craig Dawsons of the world to push their nose forward.

"Last year to some extent we had a lot of senior players who were blocking the way for those players but not getting a game.

"I think it's been a good window in terms of letting players leave the club who obviously needed to go and play regularly elsewhere, finding a couple of interesting young players in terms of Craig Dawson, who was ours last year but was loaned out, George Thorne and Billy Jones, a young lad from Preston.

"The most important thing was making sure we lost nobody and brought in a goalkeeper and a centre forward."
