West Bromwich Albion boss Steve Clarke says Chelsea needed to win the Champions League for owner Roman Abramovich to be invigorated about investing in the squad.

Clarke knows it was vital that Chelsea won the Champions League after Roman Abramovich's money had built them into a domestic super-power.

He said: "They had won all the domestic trophies, so it was the logical next step.

"I had a wry smile as I was delighted for a lot of people who did win the trophy."
