West Brom academy chief Harrison: Clubs now queue to take our kids on-loan

West Bromwich Albion academy chief Mark Harrison says the amount of loan requests they receive for their young players is a testament to how successful the club's youth system is working.

New Zealand international Chris Wood was one of the success stories of last term as he fired ten goals - including one in the FA Cup - to help Brighton win promotion to the Championship in a season-long spell with the Seagulls.

Lateef Elford-Alliyu (Tranmere), Sam Mantom (Oldham), Paul Downing (Shrewsbury), Romaine Sawyers (Port Vale) and Kayleden Brown (Tranmere, Dagenham & Redbridge and Port Vale) also gained valuable experience on loan.

"We've never had as many players go out on loan," Harrison told the WBA website. "That's pleasing and already Dan Ashworth has had a couple of enquiries for boys for next season.

"I think next season we feel we'll have what we can genuinely call a development squad, which a lot of the big Premier League clubs have had for the last two or three seasons.

"They've gained a lot of experience from going out on loan and from going out on loan to League One clubs there are now Championship clubs making enquiries about one or two of the boys.

"That gives us an indication of what level they're at. Chris was a regular member of the Brighton squad and enjoyed his second promotion in two years at the age of 19 - what a fantastic achievement that is for a young player.

"As 19-year-olds they have been going out on loan to League One clubs and holding their own.

"The average age to make your league debut in the Premier League is 21.

"So, if our lads are holding their own in League One as 19-year-olds, you'd like to think they can at least cope with the Championship when they are 21 and 22. Ultimately, we're here to produce players for the first team."
