Werder Bremen are chasing Sunderland striker Jozy Altidore.

The Daily Star Sunday says the USA striker is wanted on loan at the Bundesliga side with an option of a £4million permanent deal.

Altidore, 25, has failed to justify his £6.5million price tag since arriving from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar nearly 18 months ago.

The controversial Paolo Di Canio regime signed Altidore, who hit 40 goals during a two-year spell in Holland.

He has so far scored only three goals for the Black Cats - and just one in the Premier League.
