Werder Bremen chief reacts to link for Arsenal defender Mertesacker

Werder Bremen say they won't be seeking to re-sign Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker.

The former Germany international has been out injured this season due to a knee injury, and speculation had grown that the 32-year-old's stay in north London would end sooner than when his contract expires in the summer.

But Bremen sporting director Frank Baumann says the club will not answer his call for first team football, telling Kicker: "We don't want to sign new players this winter - we want to sell a few instead.

"Even if we had the chance [to sign him], we don't want to sign any players."
