Wenger: Xhaka signing has Arsenal 'quite solid in midfield'

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that the arrival of Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka has enormously strengthened the Gunners' midfield.

The 23-year-old, who arrived from Borussia Monchengladbach earlier this month, has so far been the only major signing for the North London club this summer.

Wenger feels the addition Xhaka has eased Arsenal's midfield woes having lost experienced trio Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky and Mathieu Flamini at season's end.

"[Xhaka brings] his passing ability to play through the lines from deep positions, his work rate, and he's good in the air," Wenger told Arsenal Player.

"He's a young boy as well, 23 years old. There's a lot to come from him. We lost three midfielders: Flamini, Rosicky and Arteta, and numbers-wise we are quite solid in midfield now.

"(Mohamed) Elneny had a big impact when he came here, (Francis) Coquelin was injured for a long time and is back. (Santi) Cazorla will come back, (Jack) Wilshere is back… so we are solid in midfield."
