Wenger warned his Arsenal future hangs on Celtic result

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been warned Champions League failure cannot be risked.

Ahead of tonight's playoff against Celtic, the Daily Star says Wenger has been given a stark boardroom warning his future could be on the line if Arsenal are blown out of Europe by Celtic.

The Gunners face the Scottish giants in Glasgow tonight in the first leg of a Champions League qualifier which could be worth £40m to the side who go through.

Arsenal have never failed to qualify for Europe's top club competition under the Frenchman, since he arrived in north London in 1996.

But with the club trophyless since landing the FA Cup in 2005, big questions will be asked if the Gunners fail to qualify in the second leg next Wednesday.

And Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis hinted Wenger's position could be under threat when he said: "If we don't deliver success Arsene is under the same pressure as anyone in that position."

The comment - made in the just-published book, Arsenal: The Making of a Modern Superclub (Vision Sports Publishing) - is the strongest hint yet from the Emirates boardroom that Wenger, who has two seasons left on his contract, is not bulletproof.
