Wenger relieved with Arsenal win after 'nightmare week': Pride and desire

Arsenal produced an impressive performance for their 2-0 win at Europa League opponents AC Milan on Thursday night.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan's first goal for the club put the Premier League side ahead, cutting in from the left to fire in with the aid of a deflection off Milan skipper Leonardo Bonucci.

Aaron Ramsey deservedly doubled their lead before half-time, collecting Mesut Ozil's piercing pass through the centre of Milan's defence to round keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and tap in. The Gunners were comfortableon the second-half to win the first-leg of their round 16 tie 2-0.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger remarked: “It is an important win of course after we had a nightmare week. Overall it is important to win, but it is not qualification. We have to finish the job at home. I am happy with the spirit and response we gave.

“We were not in a position to take risks, but we could not be too cautious as you lose fluidity. We defended with resilience until the end.

“When you play in a cup final it is hard to digest in a few days. When you are knocked down like a boxer you don't have time to react and you are only halfway up, but you have to respond. Your pride and desire to show quality has to come through in the game."
