A-League club Wellington Phoenix have secured the services of Australian wingback Jimmy Downer.

The 23-year old is set to land at the New Zealand outfit from Dutch Eerste Divisie club Sparta Rotterdam in the coming weeks but details of the deal are as yet unclear.

Downey kicked off his professional career with Perth Glory in 2007 before moving to Townsville where he spent six months with the now-defunct North Queensland Fury. He then travelled to Europe to sign a contract with Sparta for whom he made two appearances this season before coming back to Australia to play in the Victorian Premier League.

The Gympie-born Downey is a former Australia U20 international, making nine appearances for the Young Socceroos in 2006.
