Simon Elliott is closing in on retirement according to recent reports.

The 36-year old midfielder is currently on a short-term deal with the Wellington Phoenix but his injury replacement contract ends on Sunday and after that he will return to being a free agent.

The New Zealand international will return to Los Angeles, where he lives, and has reportedly told friends he will make a decision on his future when he returns to the 'States.

Elliott has enjoyed an extensive career which has seen him spend eight seasons in MLS and three in the English Premier League with Fulham.
