Wellington Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata is almost certain that the club will play a friendly with English Premier League club Wigan Athletic. The match is proposed to take place in Wellington later this year and is a boost for football in New Zealand after the failed attempt of luring Everton and Fulham.

Pignata believes that Wigan are very close to agreeing to the trip after holding positive discussions with Latics manager Steve Bruce.
