Wellington overcome Central Coast

Wellington Phoenix has extended their unbeaten run to three games with a 1-0 victory over the Central Coast Mariners. Played at a sun drenched Bluetongue Stadium, the Phoenix netted in the 53rd minute through defender Karl Dodd in a brave win for the club, their first against the Mariners in the A-League. After the match, Dodd was chuffed to have contributed to such an important win. "I'm just happy we got three points," he said. "To win away from home is always important and I'm happy I was able to contribute. "It's all about creating opportunities and I'm stoked I was able to get on the end of one and put it in the net." Mariners football manager, Lawrie McKinna said his players were frustrated by the opposition during the match but was complimentary of the way the Phoenix went about it. "We had a break last week and training has been ok, but that's no excuse, you have to switch on for a game," McKinna said. "We had to turn up and do a job today, but we never did. "I don't think it was a great game, they came here to frustrate us, which they did and they held out pretty well, even the last five minutes they ran the clock down great and credit to them." Wellington will meet the Queensland Roar at home on Sunday whilst the Mariners can atone for the loss with another home fixture, this time against the Newcastle Jets.
