We played with courage but PSG strikers took their chances - Chelsea defender Ivanovic

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic believes he and his teammates played courageously in Paris on Tuesday night.

The Blues were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 which sets up an enthralling second leg tussle at Stamford Bridge in three weeks' time.

Ivanovic is aware Chelsea will have to be at their best to overcome the French champions but holds hope after John Obi Mikel scored a vital away goal for the Londoners.

"It was a very difficult game. We needed to try to play our game and we tried to score the away goal," said the Serbian defender.

"They scored which was massive for them, but we kept going. We know we have to do everything to win at home and go through.

"We came here with courage to try to score the goals. We had a couple of chances before they scored. We lost concentration in the end.

"We were a little bit open. Top strikers like PSG have, they take every single chance. We have to be more compact and more careful. These small details can decide a game."

Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring with a deflected 39th-minute free-kick before Mikel replied for the Blues on the stroke of half-time.

Edinson Cavani came off the bench in the second half to volley between the legs of Thibaut Courtois from an angle in the 78th minute, allowing Laurent Blanc's men take a slender lead into the return bout on March 9.
