Manchester United defender Chris Smalling accepts that his side are now faced with a difficult task of beating Wolfsburg to qualify for the next stage of Champions League.
The Red Devils missed the opportunity to wrap up qualification as they stuttered to a goalless draw against PSV at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
They will now travel to Wolfsburg in their last group game on December 8 in a bid to progress to the Round of 16 prompting Smalling to admit that perhaps United may have shot themselves in the foot.
The 26-year-old told BT Sport: "We had more than enough to win the game and make the difference in the final game.
"Coming in we saw Wolfsburg as the toughest game – and we have given ourselves a lot of hard work.
"We needed to move the ball quicker – and if we got the first goal it would've made it a lot easier.
"We go there with hope because we have beaten them here."
