WATFORD v MAN UTD RECAP: Last-gasp Red Devils edge past Hornets

Manchester United moved into second spot on the Premier League table courtesy of a narrow win over Watford on Saturday.

Memphis Depay opened the scoring for the Red Devils with a calm volley from Ander Herrera's floating cross in the 11th minute before Watford skipper Troy Deeney struck from the penalty spot with three minutes of regular time remaining.

However, United came up with a 90th-minute winner when Bastian Schweinsteiger's angled effort was rolled over the goal-line by Deeney who tried in vain to deny the German.

The win was United's second on the trot and helped extend Louis van Gaal side's unbeaten run to five in the league as Quique Sanchez Flores' Watord fell to 13th with a second straight defeat.

TALKING POINTS

- United continuing to pick up points. Is this putting them in good stead for a genuine shot at the title?

- Are Watford good enough to push for a top-half finish provided they get some luck along the way?

WHAT'S NEXT?

Watford will look to bounce back with a trip to bottom-placed Aston Villa on Saturday

QUOTES CORNER

Man Utd's van Gaal on the performance of Depay:

"The goal was superb. I think he played a very good match, like Jesse Lingard. The way we played, it suits them. That was good."

Watford boss Flores on the harshness of the result:

“It was painful to lose in extra-time because I think we deserved to draw.

"In the second half we made a lot of effort to score. We scored in the last moment and felt it was possible to get a point against Man United - a very tough game - so to lose is very hard."
