WATFORD FOCUS: Ighalo the heartbeat of the Hornets

If we didn't know already the level of Odion Ighalo's ability last week, his performance against Tottenham on Monday proves he is a bonafide top-class Premier League striker.

The 26-year-old gave Martin Skrtel the run around in their 3-0 thumping of Liverpool recently and then scored a sublime goal against one of the best goalkeepers in the top flight in their 2-1 defeat to Spurs.

His toe-poke past Hugo Lloris, preceded by strength and guile to outmuscle Eric Dier - perhaps more associated with his strike partner Troy Deeney - demonstrated that there is a lot more to his armoury than simply finishing off the up-field work supplied by his Hornets colleagues.

Ighalo's 41st-minute effort also saw him become the highest scoring player of 2015 in all of England's top four divisions with 30 goals.

Despite Nathan Ake receiving his marching orders in the 63rd minute, the Hornets team showed plenty of passion against Spurs, with Ighalo taking one for the team himself with a yellow card - his level of commitment to the cause unquestioned.

Watford battled bravely but despite their endeavour, Son Heung-min scored late to break hearts at Vicarage Road. Perhaps most notably, Ighalo outperformed England's Harry Kane, who struggled throughout and failed to convert his chances.

The Nigerian meanwhile did not need any second opportunities to find the net which has become a regular occurrence in his 19 outings in 2015/16.

As David Pleat said on BBC Radio 5 live : “The Deeney and Ighalo partnership has carried Watford this season." This highlights just how important he has been to Quique Sanchez Flores' side.

His 14 league goals this campaign is more than what Luis Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo AND Lionel Messi have scored in Spain this campaign.

In his first full season in England's top flight, the former Granada, Udinese and Oslo Lyn forward has taken the Premier League by storm.

If he carries on delivering top level performances as he has done so far this campaign, then it will only be a matter of time before such clubs as Tottenham, as well as England and Europe's bigger teams, take a serious interest rather than the attention he has previously attracted from the Chinese Super League.
