Watford boss keen to extend stay of Middlesbrough's Johnson

Watford boss Adrian Boothroyd admits he's seeking talks with Middlesbrough rival Gareth Southgate about extending the loan of winger Adam Johnson.

"I'd like to keep him for the season but I'll have to have a chat with Gareth first," said Boothroyd. "It's important in situations like these that the communication lines are kept open. I've given Gareth the same treatment I did with Sir Alex when we had Ben Foster.

"He knows what I think about the player. Adam is thriving at being given the opportunity to play regularly and he's learning his trade. There are things he doesn't do consistently yet but he's working on those and this is a good place to do your apprenticeship."
