Warnock still unaware of reasons for Aston Villa departure - 'Houllier never wanted to talk'

Derby Country defender Stephen Warnock still remains unaware of the circumstances leading to his departure from Aston Villa.

The 34-year-old was frozen out of the squad by former Villa manager Gerard Houllier and eventually departed from the club in January 2013 when he signed for Leeds United.

Recalling his Villa Park exit, a still confused Warnock said: "I had a difficult time at Villa when Gerard Houllier came in. I was playing well at the time and then suddenly I got left out of the squad and things took a bit of a slump after that.

"Sometimes you get made a scapegoat or can be mistakenly branded as being a bit of a trouble-maker or something like that.

"If it was about the wages we were on, he never told us that. It would have been nice to have been told. That was never mentioned to me.

"The tough thing from my point of view was that it was never explained and every time I went in to try to ask about it, he didn't want to have the conversation."
