Ward-Prowse encouraged by Southampton performance

Southampton are going through a sticky period in the Premier League. While the club are not in danger of being relegated, they are winless in five.

Saints fans are a bit anxious about the club's performances, and are fully aware that wins are needed in the Christmas period, or the club could get dragged down into the bottom three before they realise it.

Despite the lack of results, midfielder James Ward-Prowse was pleased with some aspects of his side's performance against champions Chelsea on Saturday.

"Against a few top teams now we've kept them quiet and we can take positives from that, but the most important thing was the character we showed after a disappointing result in midweek," he said.

"It's a killer time to concede a goal, right on the stroke of half-time, but we showed in the second half that we kept our spirits high.

"We kept working hard and possibly could've nicked one at the end."

The problem for Southampton is their inability to get wins in games against the so-called "lesser sides," which is why they are only 12th in the league. The coming fixtures against Huddersfield, Tottenham and Manchester United are crucial to the club's season. Two defeats in those three games, and the Saints could be right near the bottom three.
