Ward-Prowse dreams of following Stokes footsteps in Man Utd cup final

James Ward-Prowse is aiming to follow in the footsteps of Southampton legend Bobby Stokes against Manchester United.

Southampton prepare to battle it out against United in the final of the EFL Cup at Wembley on Sunday and the match most certainly holds a lot of significance for the Saints.

The South Coast side did manage to overcome United in a cup final in 1976 when the great Bobby Stokes stunned the Red Devils in the FA Cup and now Saints midfielder Ward-Prowse has expressed his desire to emulate the club legend this weekend.

"It's obviously a nice affiliation to have with Bobby Stokes," he said.

"Hopefully that trend can continue for this final. It would be an incredibly special moment if it was to happen.

"Every kid grows up doing that. I remember kicking the ball around the garden with my brother, re-enacting famous goals and moments.

"They're the sort of things you think about, and that built the foundation for me as a young professional to make sure I could get myself in those positions. We've got ourselves here and we need to make the most of it.

"But the most important thing is making sure the team wins, regardless of who scores the winning goal or anything like that. The team comes first."
