Wales boss Coleman excuses Swansea skipper Williams for big miss

Wales manager Chris Coleman has rated Ashley Williams as one of the best Welsh defenders he has ever seen following their 0-0 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday night.

The Swansea City captain missed a sitter in the Euro2016 qualifier when he was unable to head home Gareth Bale's corner at the Cardiff City Stadium but Coleman has excused him for the miss as he was formidable at the back to deny Safet Susic's Bosnia on a number of occasions.

"Ashley Williams is one of the best defenders I've seen in Wales football but we need to have a word with him because when he attacks corners he looks like he's defending them," said Coleman.

"Alright, he missed the header, but how many times did he get us out of trouble at the other end?

"When he came off the pitch he had nothing left Ashley as did the rest of the lads and that is how it should be when you play for your country - that is what our fans want to see.

"We need to keep clean sheets if we're going to do anything. The lads were throwing their heads in front of shots there and we need to have that mentality."

The draw sent Wales to the top of the Group B table with four points from two matches ahead of Monday's home meeting with fourth-placed Cyprus who lost 2-1 to Israel in Nicosia.
