Waghorn only thinking of Sunderland future

Martyn Waghorn wants to stay and fight for his place at Sunderland.

Waghorn enjoyed a successful season at Leicester City last season and very nearly helped the Foxes win promotion back to the Premier League, as they were beaten by Cardiff City in the semi-finals of the play-offs.

The 20-year-old had implied he would like to stay at Leicester for another year during his time in the Midlands, but a return to Sunderland for pre-season training has left him in no doubt as to where his priorities lie.

"I don't want to go out on loan," Waghorn told The Journal. "I'm going to get my head down and I'm going to do everything I can to stay at Sunderland.

"I want to play for this club and I want to play in the Premiership. I've got a chance to and it's up to me. I'm really going to go for it.

"I had a really good time at Leicester, I enjoyed it, but I'm really happy to be back at Sunderland. I'm just pushing to get into the team and hopefully cement a place in the first team squad this season."
