Geordie legend Chris Waddle says Newcastle United fans must give manager Sam Allardyce some breathing space.

"I feel for any manager at any club," he told BBC Radio Five Live. "Straight away he wasn't the public's choice so if the results are not great it's very easy for the fans to stamp their feet and clap their hands and say let's get a new man.

"Who are they going to get? Are they going to start again?

"You are just hoping for a quick remedy and it doesn't happen.

"Just give him a chance. There's no way they are going to get relegated.

"This year it's about building and building. Add a few players in January hopefully and then see what happens."
