Villa's Young targets Capello breakthrough

Aston Villa winger Ashley Young admits he is targeting a place in Fabio Capello's first England squad.

He told Villa's website: "I'll always be grateful to Steve McClaren for selecting me. I'd played for the Under-21s and he saw enough to put me in the senior squad. Then he gave me my first cap.

"But that's the thing in football - things move on and as a player you just have to deal with that. Now I have to impress a new man, but so does everybody else.

"I wasn't on the pitch for the Croatia game, but that doesn't mean it didn't hurt. We felt we were good enough to qualify for the European Championships and I think everybody expects England to qualify for major tournaments. I suppose that's why Steve went."

Looking to the future, Young continued: "Hopefully I'm young enough to get more opportunities, but for some of the players I suppose time is running out and that's what makes it so frustrating.

"I have to concentrate on my Villa form. That's what got me into the England squad in the first place and I'll never take that for granted."
