Curtis Davies' hopes of a move to Aston Villa have been hit by Gary Cahill's refusal to join West Brom as a makeweight in the proposed deal.
The two Midlands clubs held regular talks and agreed a cash-plus-player deal involving defender Cahill - but he has thrown a spanner in the works by turning down a move to The Hawthorns in a bid to fight for a Villa shirt, according to the Express & Star.
Albion are keen on a cash-plus-player deal as Luton, from whom they signed 22-year-old Davies, will receive 12 and a half per cent of any sell-on fee over £3million.
