Aston Villa defender Curtis Davies says underfire Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes deserves to be cut some slack after his mistake in this week's defeat.

Davies told Villa's website: "We started off really well and got the early goal and managed to keep them quiet.

"We thought they would come back into the game after that but if anything we created more.

"Their goalkeeper made two or three unbelievable saves and in reality we could have gone in at the break three or four goals up.

"We came out after the break and we knew they would throw everything at us. But we managed to get that all-important second goal which gave us an important cushion."
