Spurs held third from Chelsea during the week but now see themselves in fourth position with North London rivals Arsenal sitting just four points in arrears in fifth and Villas-Boas is concerned about again dropping out of Champions League contention.
"You can't hide from what has happened in the past with Spurs," Villas-Boas said after Dimitar Berbatov scored the only goal at White Hart Lane.
"You just have to make sure that we are able to fight against it. It has been difficult month for us.
"If we are able to find our form or confidence and win then we can end that cycle that Spurs normally have. We just have to work hard."
