Villas-Boas criticises Defoe for Tottenham walk-off

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has responded to Jermain Defoe's decision to walk straight down the tunnel when he was brought off on the weekend.

The England striker was replaced by Emmanuel Adebayor in the 57th minute of Spurs' 1-0 home loss to Wigan Athletic on Saturday and reacted angrily, walking past the dugout and into the dressing room at White Hart Lane.

Villas-Boas met Defoe's actions with negativity and feels that there needs to be more team unity if the club wants to improve their results.

"For sure it is not something that is very pleasing to see," said Villas-Boas.

"The most important thing for the players to realise is that we do things for the benefit of the team. We understand individual frustrations but we, as a team, are more important.

"The game wasn't going well for Defoe in our thought process. Maybe he could think the opposite but we don't take him off to punish him. We took him off to improve the team."
