Villarreal are locked in talks with Valencia for defender Carlos Marchena.
Las Provincias says Villarreal see the World Cup winner as a replacement for Uruguay defender Diego Godin.
Preliminary talks over a price for Marchena have opened between the two clubs and are expected to accelerate once Marchena returns for preseason training.
Marchena is on an extended break following Spain's World Cup triumph.
